N.S.W. state election 2015 - APTNSW policies

End the motorway madness!

The evidence is in. Despite decades of expanding the Sydney motorway network, it has not provided a long term solution to solving Sydney's congestion problem. Motorways provide temporary relief for motorists before more motorists clamour for the empty lanes resulting in more traffic and no improvement in journey times. This phenomenon is known as induced demand. Another problem with motorways lies in government budgets. There is only so much money to be spent by governments, They cannot do it all so each choice they make must be a wise one. Can you imagine if we had a new Sydney-West rail line instead of the M4/Westconnex? What if we had built the second harbour rail crossing instead of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel? Or if an expanded Eastern Suburbs railway line was built instead of the Eastern Distributor? Every dollar that is diverted to non-solutions like motorways is an opportunity lost to spend a dollar on public transport.
