N.S.W. state election 2015 - APTNSW policies

Regional public transport

Inter-regional public transport is vital for regional communities and Sydney-siders as well. It promotes social cohesion, tourism and business as well as providing regional residents with essential access to medical services and other amenities in Sydney. Unfortunately, the current XPT fleet has traveled millions of kilometres more than it was designed to travel and past governments have constantly delayed upgrading or replacing the fleet. APTNSW is concerned that these essential services may be cut, which would be disastrous for regional NSW. Compare this to Victoria where investment in V-Line services over the past decade has seen passenger numbers booming and services being added. Victoria has also benefited from track improvements which have resulted in quicker journey times between the city and the country.

In NSW, there are several options for track straightening between Sydney and Newcastle as well as on the South Coast line. These improvements could increase the average speed of services leading to faster journey times.

APTNSW calls on NSW election candidates to commit to restoring and improving the existing level of services for NSW Trainlink trains and coaches. We also call on candidates to commit to upgrading the rail fleet and regional rail lines within the next term of government. Improved rolling stock and track alignments can improve travel times and make regional public transport an attractive option to a greater number of passengers.
