The screens were to be placed in the upper and lower decks of all electric train carriages, providing non-stop entertainment, train service, and community information, paid for by advertising. Improved train security was also included in the package. The audio was to have been transmitted by FM radio to headsets.
The scheme was being promoted by a private consortium, using new technology to transmit the data via the existing overhead wires which provide train power.
Many train passengers who had become aware of the proposal objected to the distracting nature of the flickering screens and the Orwellian aspects of the continuous, compulsory, "entertainment".
