Parramatta's future - will the land use, transport mix work?

posted Monday 18 November 2002
Architecture writer Elizabeth Farrelly muses over the difficulties facing planners to ensure that Parramatta becomes a functional city ("Little sister, just do as the big city does" - Sydney Morning Herald, 12 November 2002, p 13).

Some quotes-

"For a truly sinister cultural experience try that cuckoo in Parramatta's nest, that maze of the living dead, its Westfield Shoppingtown"

"Can it (the planned 35,000 sq.metres of retail) work, so close to the dreaded mother-of-all-Westies which, with roughly the same tenant-number as the rest of Church Street together, commands twice the floorspace, attracts twice the pedestrian flow, and reaps three times the turnover?"

"Buses will not have to go underground like a proper, civilised, shop-bought interchange would (sic)."
