"Auslink" - A New Federal Approach to Land Transport Development

posted Friday 7 February 2003
In November 2002 the federal Department of Transport and Regional Services released a public discussion paper on proposed changes to the development of land transport in Australia. Called "AusLink", it proposed to reform existing national transport planning by merging previously discrete planning and funding arrangements for rail, road and other modes. It proposed that projects would compete for funding on their merits, regardless of mode. Comments were invited, with a closing date of 7 February 2003. See http://www.dotars.gov.au/transinfra/auslink.htm.

A broad coalition of transport, environment and health groups, formed with the aim of influencing AusLink, adopted the name "Transport Australia". As AusLink was a fairly daunting document of 100 pages, the group developed a generic submission to AusLink which could be used by other sympathetic groups or individuals. A record of some of this co-ordination is on http://203.24.133.124/~auslink/.

APT endorsed the Transport Australia document and submitted it to AusLink on 1 February 2003. AusLink has since advised that it received more than 600 submissions. Inquiries can be made on 1800-026-222.
