Light rail task force

A community-based task force is being established to consider light rail options (other than the proposed
Circular Quay extension) across the State.
The task force will include invited representatives of the light rail
and bus industries, councils, tourism and construction industries,
Government roads sector, academia and non-government organisations.
The task force will be chaired by the Director-General
of Transport NSW, Michael Deegan. It will be required to
complete its deliberations and provide advice by September.
Draft terms of reference for the task force are:
- Provide advice to the Minister for Transport on potential future role of light rail transport in NSW and the Greater Metropolitan Region in particular
- Review the 1997 draft Light Rail Strategic Plan and advise on the need to finalise a strategic plan or a policy on light rail for NSW
- Provide input, as requested, on specific light rail projects, proposals or concepts, such as the Central Sydney Light Rail and light rail on Parramatta Road
- Consider and advise on funding of light rail
infrastructure, and the potential to implement light rail
in conjunction with other major projects
- Consider and advise on transport and land use integration issues concerning light rail
- Provide advice on the management of light rail systems from a Government perspective, including existing lines
- Complete all work and report by September 2003.
