Action for Public Transport (N.S.W.) Inc. |
Development of the system has reached the stage where Austrans would like to set up its first public demonstration route. The system consists of small driverless cars carrying about 9 people, running on narrow gauge steel tracks having a unique profile. The system has many of the characteristics of monorails, but Austrans told Action for Public Transport it has superior cornering, climbing, and switching capabilities. Operating costs are claimed to be so low that no operating subsidies would be required. The system is ideally suited to passenger loads of 1000 to 4000 passengers per hour per direction. APT found ride quality to be an issue, there being a tendency to "hunt", even at the low speeds of the test track.
