The Roads & Traffic Authority has been testing its Public Transport Information and Priority System (PTIPS), using 15 long (14.5m) Scania buses equipped with GPS equipment, since September 2003. For buses running three or more minutes late, the system can over-ride the phasing of the next and subsequent sets of traffic signals in favour of the bus. The process continues until the bus is back on schedule.
The trial will now be extended to all buses operating on route 400. This will involve the fitting of tracking and communications equipment to a further 27 buses. (Transit Times, May 2004)
