New trains for Sydney

posted Wednesday 8 September 2004
RailCorp has requested Expressions of Interest for the Financing, Design, Manufacture and Maintenance of Electric Passenger Trains for Sydney (SMH 6/9/04, p.31). It intends to carry out the work using a Public-Private Partnership.

RailCorp does not intend to specify the number of train sets required to be manufactured, but only the number required to be available for service. This number is currently estimated to be in the order of 125 four-car sets.

It is proposed that payment will be based on the performance of the contract against a number of Key Performance Indicators.

The preferred site for carrying out maintenance of the replacement rollingstock has not yet been established, but a RailCorp-owned greenfield (sic) site at Auburn is an available option.

RailCorp says its intention is to procure a modern, safe, well maintained, reliable fleet of air-conditioned rollingstock for the CityRail travelling public by the end of 2010;

Tenders close on Wednesday 13 October 2004.
