Taronga Zoo - car parking threatens public transport

posted Thursday 9 June 2005
A $33 million development by Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo threatens to disrupt bus and ferry services.

Central to the problem is a proposed multi-storey car park in front of the zoo's top entrance gate. The structure would be 2 to 3 levels high and 164 metres long and would increase present car parking capacity by 50%, to 935 places.

Given that the zoo is on a peninsula projecting into Sydney Harbour, with only two approach roads, the potential for increased traffic jams is high. Such congestion could seriously disrupt existing bus services, and jeopardize timetabled ferry connections at Taronga Zoo Wharf.

APT has recommended the car park be placed underground, for aesthetic reasons, and that bus lanes be implemented to avoid late running. Having buses whiz past motorists stranded in traffic would also send a strong psychological message to those motorists about the available transport alternatives.
