Cameras to trap Bus, Transit lane abusers

posted Saturday 15 October 2005
At long last, more cameras are being installed on Sydney's Bus and Transit lanes to record illegal use. Thirteen cameras are to be used. Cameras have already been installed at Sydney University footbridge on Parramatta Road (2), on the Warringah Freeway near Berry Street, and on the Liverpool to Parramatta Transitway at various locations.

The cameras began operating on 26 September 2005 but no fines are to be issued for a period of four weeks from that date. The fine for illegal use of the lanes is $225 and three licence demerit points.

Authorities fear there may be a low community awareness of the rules regarding the use of these special traffic lanes.

"Bus Lanes" are available to buses, taxis, hire cars, motor bikes, bicycles, and emergency vehicles.

"Bus Only Lanes" may be used only by buses and emergency vehicles.

Transitways may be used by authorised buses, Transitway vehicles and emergency vehicles.
