NEWS RELEASE: Commuters Want Guarantees From New Ferry Deal

posted Thursday 1 November 2007
A commuter group wants guarantees that service levels will not be jettisoned if private companies take over the running of Sydney’s ferries.

Action for Public Transport spokesman, Allan Miles, said that who ran the ferries is irrelevant to commuters. “What passengers want,” he said, “is a fast, frequent, reliable and safe service that is integrated with the total public transport system.”

“Especially” he said, “there must be sufficient capacity to avoid the fiascos where passengers are stranded at a wharf because the ferry is full”.

Mr Miles said that any new scheme must ensure that the ferries remain an integral part of Sydney’s public transport system.

“This includes acceptance of multi-mode TravelPass, Tcard or similar tickets,” he said.

“Timed connections with buses at wharves must continue,” he added, “and there must be a co-ordinated approach to marketing and information systems.” Mr Miles said that a customer should not need to know who runs the ferries before making an enquiry.

“The few Sydney Harbour routes already in private hands must be included in any new arrangements,” he said. “Sydney’s public transport must be presented to riders as a seamless system, just as the roads are a seamless system to motorists.”

Action for Public Transport thanks Commissioner Walker and his team for their detailed analysis, for the reasoned options, and for the lucid report itself.
