Spokesman for Action for Public Transport, Allan Miles, said that CityRail has scheduled trackwork on the line for next weekend.

"We understood that CityRail policy is to avoid such work when large events are held," he said. "Trackwork is planned up to a year in advance, but the City to Surf is an annual run that should have been recognised."
Mr Miles said that while regular 'bustitution' is accepted, if not welcomed, by CityRail customers, he feared that many runners will miss the start of the race. "The race starts at 9.00 am," Mr Miles said. "Normal trains at that time on a Sunday morning can handle the crowds."

However, Mr Miles said that he feared that the substitute buses would be too few and too slow to handle the large numbers expected. "Many people could be late," he said.
Mr Miles urged transport authorities to ensure that sufficient buses are available to meet the demand.
