Possible resumption of Maldon-Dombarton railway construction

posted Saturday 18 July 2009
Work on this 35 km line was stopped by the Greiner state government shortly after winning office in 1988. APT understands that significant compensation for cancellation had to be paid to the contractors. The line would have provided an efficient route for carrying freight between western Sydney and Port Kembla, minimising conflict with passenger services.

According to Rail Express, "[t]he Federal Government committed a further $3 million on July 8th to move to the next stage of assessing the feasibility of a rail line between Maldon and Port Kembla via Dombarton".

The report on the 2009 pre-feasibility study can be seen at http://www.nationbuildingprogram.gov.au/publications/reports/pdf/Maldon_Dombarton_Freight_Rail_Line_Pre_feasibility_Study_Final_Report.pdf

The study mentions the possible use of the line for passenger services.
