Between July and September 2009 the number of passengers travelling between Madrid and Barcelona on the AVE high speed train outstripped the number who flew. More than 651 000 opted for the train. Only 643 000 flew. The 236 kph train covers the 500km in 2 hrs 40 min. Travel times and fares are comparable and competitive.
