APTNSW questions weekend "clearways" policy.

posted Wednesday 5 March 2014
Action for Public Transport agrees with the proposal to introduce weekend "clearways" (restricted parking) on Sydney's most congested arterial roads. But we do not agree with Roads Minister Duncan Gay who, in the Sydney Morning Herald of 26 February was reported as saying that he "would not remove weekend parking spots on busy roads unless the government provides replacement spots nearby".

We have told the minister that we do not believe that it should be the taxpayer's responsibility to fund the provision of alternative parking.

The urban planning policies of successive governments have long stressed the need to discourage the use of private vehicles when such use leads to traffic congestion. Supplementary policies, limiting the amount of parking available in CBDs for example, have supported those policies.
