NEWS RELEASE: Changes to bus stops in Broadway and Newtown

posted Sunday 10 August 2014
The relocation and removal of bus stops in Broadway and Newtown will not necessarily improve journeys for Inner West travellers, according to a public transport consumer group.

Allan Miles, secretary of Action for Public Transport, said that if it takes longer to walk to and from the bus stop, the passenger's overall door-to-door journey time could be degraded instead.

"The government's commitment under Sydney's Bus Future," Mr Miles said, "included introducing bus priority infrastructure along key corridors, more bus and transit lanes and priority at traffic lights." Mr Miles said that none of this had happened yet in King Street.

"It's well past time for a more holistic allocation of road space," Mr Miles said. "Bus stop locations should encourage bus use, not hinder it."

Mr Miles said that the RMS obsession with keeping the traffic moving at all costs still prevails.

"Direct access from buses to Redfern station and the Broadway Shopping Centre is still wishful thinking," Mr Miles said. "At least one, sometimes two roads must be crossed."

Mr Miles said that a boost in the reliability of bus services for Inner West Bus customers was promised by Transport for NSW following the changes. "We look forward to seeing the proof," he added.
