2020-2021 bus cuts

Readers will be well aware that the NSW state government, under premiers Baird and Berjiklian, privatised many formerly-public services including bus services in several regions in Sydney's inner suburbs. It has frequently been noted that, when privatisation comes in the door, service standards go out the window.

For example, route M50 along Victoria Road was withdrawn from 24 October 2020. From 24 January 2021, all-stops buses were thinned so former M50 passengers sought to use express 5xxX buses. However, express buses don't stop at every stop so many passengers needed to walk futher to and from their buses than formerly. And those who had used to M50 to travel to destinations generally towards Coogee had to change to light rail, adding typically 10 minutes to their trips.

As well as slowing the average trip, unco-ordinated vehicle changes add to the variability of trip times .This is another negative, because it means you must allow more time for the trip if you need to arrive by a particular time.
